 KVK Hoshiarpur organizes demonstration on Happy Seeder

The district level extension agency of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bahowal, Hoshiarpur carried out method demonstration on wheat sowing with Happy Seeder at KVK associated progressive farmer, Sh. Jasbir Singh of village Feroze Raulian in block Tanda on 8-11-2023 under the ongoing campaign on paddy residue management.

Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK Hoshiarpur informed that Sh. Jasbir Singh Judge, besides being Lambardar of the village, is a torchbearer of resource conservation technologies technologies and is sowing wheat crop with Happy Seeder for the last 5 years for direct sowing of wheat after harvesting of paddy with Super SMS attached combine harvester. He also uses rain gun for irrigating the wheat fields and is of the view that there is 66% saving of irrigation water by this method of irrigation. Sh. Jasbir Singh is always motivating other farmers of the area for non-burning of paddy straw and he has been feted on various occasions by the district administration, KVK and Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare for his active role in paddy straw management. Dr. Bons also said that this village was adopted for paddy residue management by KVK Hoshiarpur during 2022-23 and had successfully managed paddy straw using different in-situ and ex-situ techniques. Due to the active support of the district administration large scale adoption of baling technology was also promoted in this area to manage paddy straw.

During the method demonstration, Dr. Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering) told that Happy Seeder technology is an environment friendly technique which improves the soil health, there is less weed growth and it allows timely sowing of wheat. He told that it is a low-cost and easy technique for in-situ paddy residue management for timely sown wheat. Dr. Ajaib also informed that when sowing of wheat is done with conventional method, farmers have to practice more operations for land preparation before sowing whereas, in case of Happy Seeder, the sowing of wheat can be done in a single operation.
