Awareness programme regarding paddy residue management organized by PAU-KVK Hoshiarpur at Govt. Senior Secondary Smart School, Zahura

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bahowal, Hoshiarpur, the district level extension agency of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana conducted an awareness programme for mobilization of students to curb the practice of paddy residue burning at Govt. Senior Secondary Smart School, Zahura, block Tanda, Hoshiarpur on 24-10-2024.
During the programme, KVK experts sensitized the students regarding need for conservation of crop residue and organized different competitions for mobilizing the student’s regarding this cause.
Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK, Bahowal, Hoshiarpur while interacting with the students, imparted in-depth knowledge about the harmful effects of burning of crop residue burning and also informed about the various nutrients available in the paddy residue and their importance for the soil health. He gave a brief overview of the recommended paddy residue management technologies for in-situ & ex-situ management of paddy residue. He stressed on the need for community participation in this endeavor and urged the students to act as ambassadors to spread this noble message of non burning of paddy residue in every section of the society. Dr. Bons also highlighted the use of paddy straw in biogas plants, paper industry, use as manure, fuel & energy, use in mushroom cultivation and as fodder.
On this occasion, KVK Hoshiarpur conducted declamation, essay writing and painting competition for the school students for sensitization regarding the harmful effects of paddy residue to the environment, soil health, human health and society. The students enthusiastically participated in the different competitions. The winners of the various competitions were also awarded for boosting their competitive spirit by the guests.
A jagrukta rally was also organized by the school students to create awareness for shunning the practice of paddy residue burning.
The competitions were arranged under the guidance of Dr. Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering), KVK Hoshiarpur and the staff of Govt. Senior Secondary Smart School, Zahura, Mrs. Sukwinder Kaur, Lecturer (History), Sh. Harpreet Singh, Lecturer (Political Science), Mrs. Amrita Kumari & Mrs. Anupreet Kaur, Science Mistress.
In the end, Mrs. Asha Rani, Principal, Govt. Senior Secondary Smart School, Zahura, thanked KVK Hoshiarpur for organizing this programme in the school and gave a clarion call to the students to spread this important message.
