, Chairperson of the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC), visited Central Jail, Amritsar

 Chandigarh December 09, 2024: Hon’ble Justice Sant Parkash, Chairperson of the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC), visited Central Jail, Amritsar

today at 12:30 PM. Accompanied by the Registrar and Joint Registrar of the Commission, Justice Sant Parkash was received by key officials, including:

During the visit, the Chairperson reviewed the conditions of 3,948 inmates, comprising 3,788 males, 160 females, and six minor children staying with their mothers. Justice Sant Parkash interacted with the inmates, inquired about their grievances, and informed them of their legal rights. He also visited the kitchen, tasted the meals served, and expressed satisfaction with the quality of food.


The Civil Surgeon reported that the jail is equipped with four permanent doctors, while specialist doctors visit twice weekly and on demand. Several inmate grievances were addressed on the spot through directives issued to the concerned officers.


A meeting was convened with the attending officials to address issues of human rights violations and the concerns of inmates. The Chairperson emphasized the importance of collaboration among the District Administration, Municipal Corporation, Police Administration, healthcare facilities, and jail authorities to uphold human rights standards and address systemic challenges.


PSHRC’s Commitment on Human Rights Day


On the occasion of Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10, the Punjab State Human Rights Commission reaffirms its commitment to protecting and promoting human rights across Punjab and Chandigarh. The day commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, emphasizing the principles of dignity, freedom, and equality for all individuals.


Achievements and Progress



Since its inception on July 16, 1997, the PSHRC has addressed 3,29,731 cases of human rights violations. In 2024 alone (January–November), it has received 8,715 cases and resolved 8,000 Plus cases, demonstrating a commendable disposal rate. Under the leadership of Hon’ble Justice Sant Parkash, the Commission continues to spearhead initiatives such as institutional inspections, awareness campaigns, and youth engagement programs.
